Lost your mojo?
Don’t worry, it’s that time of year! Find comfort in two facts: you are not alone, and holidays are right around the corner.
There’s more good news too. Although motivation is complex and can be difficult to regain, a few simple behavioural changes can have a major effect on your mojo levels.
If you’ve read this far, you’re almost there so stay the course with these quick tips to help regain your mojo.
1. Don’t wait for motivation, take action
Getting started on a task and just getting it moving along will begin the cycle of motivation that builds momentum. Momentum builds momentum. If you wait for the motivation to be there or build it might never happen.
So how do you start?
This is often the most difficult part and the simple answer is to make it as easy as possible to begin. For example, you could schedule tasks and remove the decision-making factor. That way you will have a much better chance of getting going!
2. Set incremental, realistic goals
Giving your brain frequent rewards by completing small challenges that will encourage you to keep going further and further.
Focus on one task at a time and don’t get overwhelmed with the big picture!
Result driven focus is a powerful motivator for people to achieve their goals.
3. The Goldilocks rule
We love a good challenge, although only when the challenge is within a desirable range of stretching ourselves.
When a task is drastically below our current skillset it becomes boring, and those well above our skillset are discouraging and frustrating.
The Goldilocks rule allows you to find the sweet spot of motivation: working towards goals that are right on the edge of what you can currently achieve.
4. Reflect
Often, we can get so bogged down in what is on the to-do list that we forget to take stock of what we’ve achieved so far whether it be this week, this month of this year.
Block some time out and reflect on the year and what has worked well, the moments that made you smile and the things you are grateful for. This reset could be just the little booster you need to keep things moving along.
Also make note of those things that you didn’t quite get to this year that you’re keen on doing. A whole new year is just waiting around the corner!
